Had it not been for coronavirus, last week would’ve seen thousands of firefighters descending on Indianapolis for FDIC International 2020, the world’s largest firefighter training conference. New Haven (CT) Fire Chief John Alston, who was set to speak on the main stage at the show, reflects on the pandemic, its effect on the fire service and the wider world, and the underlying values of our fire heritage and what that means during times of crisis.

“Find the positive,” says Alston. “Don’t feed the negative. There is a new normal forming and we have to be a part of it or be out of step. The difference between dinosaurs and crocodiles is that one of them adapted to their environment and the other became extinct.”
