FDIC 2014: Keep Up Your ‘Reading Smoke’ Skills

If you haven’t been to many structure fires lately, your “reading smoke” skills may have diminished. Join Dave Dodson at this year’s FDIC for a refresher in the form of a workshop and breakout session.

Often, smoke issuing from a building is the only clue available to predict fire behavior and the likelihood of a flashover or rapid fire spread. First-arriving officers, incident commanders, and safety officers MUST know how to rapidly read smoke. This workshop explains the reading-smoke process and gives participants lots of practice using actual fireground video.

DAVID DODSON is the lead instructor for Response Solutions. He has served for 25 years with Colorado fire departments, having held the positions of battalion chief, training/safety officer, and emergency manager. He is a recipient of the George D. Post Fire Instructor of the Year award.
