FDIC Preview: Devon Wells Focuses on “The Instructor: Leading Change through Training”

On Wednesday, April 22, 2020, at FDIC International 2020 in Indianapolis, Indiana, from 10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m., International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI) President Devon Wells will examine the importance of leadership on the training ground with his classroom session, “The Instructor: Leading Change through Training.”

The fire service is in the midst of changes. How do we, as instructors, lead this change? How do we get firefighters to look at things differently? How can the fire service provide emergency response in a more effective and efficient way? Who will be the change agents for this paradigm shift?

It starts with training officers and instructors thinking about how these changes will positively impact the safety of the world’s fire service. This class focuses on change, the potential change agents, and the questions that need to be addressed.

Wells, a former chief of Hood River (OR) Fire & EMS, is a 28-year veteran of the fire service. He is the president of the ISFSI. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s EFO program and teaches nationally on safety, leadership, and organizational philosophy. He manages the Rural Fire Officer Facebook page and is the emergency services program manager for Tactical Aeronautics.
