On Wednesday, April 22, 2020, at FDIC International 2020 in Indianapolis, Indiana, from 1:30 p.m.-3:15 p.m., Nicholas Papa will discuss “Venting Tactically: The Ins and Outs of Opening Up” to students who need the best information on this vital fire tactic.

Ventilation can determine the outcome of a fire. Ensuring its success requires an understanding of how it works and the precautions that must be taken.

This class examines ventilation and its relationship to fire behavior and how it impacts the fire; our operations; and, most importantly, potential victims. The common pitfalls and the associated misconceptions are addressed from the perspective of reducing potential errors and preventing avoidable losses. Guiding principles and procedures for creating a universal framework to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of ventilation operations are provided.

Nicholas Papa is a lieutenant with the New Britain (CT) Fire Department, where he has served for more than 11 years. He is a second-generation firefighter. He is a frequent contributor to Fire Engineering, produced the DVD “Lights Out: Knowing the way when you can’t see,” and co-hosts the radio show “Politics & Tactics.” He is a member of the UL FSRI technical panel “The Study on Coordinated Fire Attack.”
