The Douglas County (WA) Fire District 2 in East Wenatchee placed two EMERGENCY ONE apparatus in service: a tanker/pumper and a pumper. The tanker/pumper has portable tanks and is designed for locations with limited or nonexistent water supply, according to Firefighter Scott A. White. The pumper’s all-wheel drive expedites response in all types of weather, especially winter.

  • KENWORTH T-800B chassis, 250-inch wheelbase, and cab seating for two;
  • CATERPILLAR C-12 430-hp diesel engine and EATON Autoshift 10-speed automatic transmission;

The Annandale (VA) Volunteer Fire Department runs two P.L. CUSTOM EMERGENCY VEHICLES medium-duty ambulances for heavier duty and longer service life than other size ambulances, according to Chief Brett Fitzgerald.

  • FREIGHTLINER FL-60 chassis, 168-inch wheelbase, and seating for two;
  • CUMMINS ISC 230-hp diesel engine and ALLISON MD 3066 automatic transmission;
  • aluminum body with five exterior storage compartments (one inside/outside) and six interior compartments;
  • 72-inch headroom in patient compartment;
  • one compartment for two sets of turnouts, SCBA, hand tools, and hand lights; and

The Cary (IL) Fire Protection District’s SUTPHEN aerial tower addresses tremendous residential/industrial growth, according to Lieutenant Michael D. Douglass. It replaces a pumper with a 50-foot telescoping waterway that would not reach the roofs of some of the new construction.

The Erie Township Volunteer Fire & EMS Department in LaCarne, Ohio, designed this AMERICAN FIRE & RESCUE rescue truck primarily for extrication, according to Chief Martin Mortus.

The Somerset Fire District in Franklin Township, New Jersey, operates this MARION BODY WORKS, INC. nonwalk-in rescue truck that combines equipment once carried by three vehicles, Chief Charles Maria says.

The Meridian (MS) Fire Department’s AMERICAN LAFRANCE quint has an aerial ladder, a shorter wheelbase for maneuverability, and a PTO generator that saves space, says Deputy Chief Sammy Foy. The department’s AMERICAN LAFRANCE rescue truck, which responds as a rapid intervention team at structure fires and to all city and county extrication calls, has a heavier suspension than its overloaded predecessor.

The Collings Lakes (NJ) Fire Department designed this S & S FIRE APPARATUS vehicle primarily as a tanker; it also responds first-out to structure fires as an engine and can also serve as a support truck, Chief Bill Donnelly says.

The Spencer-Roane (WV) Volunteer Fire Department designed its SMEAL pumper to deliver large quantities of water on a major fire, according to former Chief Granville H. Lance.

The Verdigris (OK) Fire Protection District has a LUVERNE FIRE APPARATUS pumper and a nonwalk-in rescue truck. Chief Robert Cox says the pumper replaces an aged vehicle and has a top-mounted pump panel and rollup compartment doors to protect the operator and reduce the vehicle’s width for highway travel. The rescue truck, which replaces a vehicle that had been greatly overloaded, is designed for medium and heavy rescue, is compact enough to respond to medical calls, and has a cab that serves as a rehab area.

The Grygla (MN) Fire Department purchased its PEMNA pumper to protect a rural area that includes a number of cabins owned by nonresidents, according to Chief Bob Thompson.
