APPARATUS DELIVERIES

The Greenawalds Fire Company of South Whitehall Township near Allentown, Pennsylvania recently purchased a tanker-pumper built on a Pierce Lance chassis. The fire district is roughly half rural (nonhydranted), including a major chemical plant, and half residential, according to Firefighter Mike Smith. The department wanted a unit that would perform equally well for a city house fire and a rural barn fire. Because of limited financial resources, the apparatus had to be flexible enough to deliver an initial attack crew safely to the scene with the equipment and water to begin a successful attack.

The unit has a four-door cab and seating for 10. It has a Detroit model 8V 92TA diesel engine, an Allison model HT 740 automatic transmission, and a 210-inch wheelbase.

The apparatus carries 1,000 gallons of water and features an Elkhart “Stinger” deckpipe connected by 3-inch piping to a Waterous Model CMBYX 1,250-gpm, two-stage pump. Also featured are three 4-inch discharges (both sides and rear) and four 3-inch discharges, including two at the rear. Preconnects of 1 3/4-, 1 1/2-, and 2 1/2-inch lines are also carried.

According to Firefighter Jim Westwood, the department had to replace its older rescue van, which was grossly overloaded and manned by one driver: With the large variety of industries, natural hazards such as rivers and dams, increased air traffic, and a great number of highway incidents, it needed to update its weak link. Members visited four cities, wrote a report, and produced a video to illustrate the need for a larger vehicle and crew.

The rescue truck placed in service is built by Anderson Engineering on an International model S-2674 chassis with a 220-inch wheelbase. A crew cab seating four is located in the body behind the driver and officer, is equipped with SCBA, and is accessible from both sides and the rear.

The roof of the body is reinforced and covered with aluminum checker plate so it can be used as an observation post. It is accessible from steps on either side of the rear doors.
