The Chesterland (OH) Fire Department designed its AMERICAN LAFRANCE pumper/tanker with a tilt cab to achieve a better turning radius, according to Chief William Russell. The department protects a rural district and also wanted full pumping capability on this unit.


  • FREIGHTLINER LCF chassis with 168-inch wheelbase and 68-inch, two-door cab with two seats;
  • CUMMINS ISC 350-hp diesel engine with ALLISON MD 3060PR automatic transmission;
  • AMERICAN LAFRANCE PowerFlow single-stage, 1,250-gpm pump with two 13/4-inch crosslays and front bumper three-inch preconnect;
  • AMERICAN LAFRANCE 2,500-gallon poly water tank with three 10-inch NEWTON electric dump valves (left, right, and rear);

Features/Equipment:

The Watsonville (CA) Fire Department designed its KME quint in tiller fashion to afford better maneuverability, explains Vehicle Maintenance Captain Ron Rackley. The quint provides greater pumping capability on a response and augments a 75-foot quint with a longer ladder.


  • Excel chassis tractor with 178-inch wheelbase and full tilt, medium-four-door cab with six seats;
  • DETROIT Series 60 470-hp diesel engine and ALLISON HD 4060PR automatic transmission;
  • overall length of 57 feet, eight inches;

Features/Equipment:

The Bettendorf (IA) Fire Department protects an urban, suburban, and rural jurisdiction with a paid/volunteer staff. Chief Gerry Voelliger says the department emphasizes rescue and quick knockdown with the first-due unit. This ALEXIS quint is designed with a large water tank and ground ladder complement to accomplish this.


  • HME 1871-P chassis with 254-inch wheelbase and long-four-door cab with 12-inch raised roof and six seats;
  • CATERPILLAR C12 455-hp diesel engine with ALLISON HD 4060P automatic transmission;

The Alameda County (CA) Fire Department designed its SVI TRUCKS, INC. unit to carry a large complement of urban search and rescue (USAR) equipment, says Captain David Eaton. The truck responds on first-alarm assignments and to technical rescues.

  • five HANNAY reels (two electric cord, two low-pressure air, and one hydraulic);
  • RAMSEY 21/2- to five-ton portable winch with four receivers;
  • module for 14 spare SCBA cylinders; and
  • light and power with ONAN 25-kw generator, SVI nine-kw Command Light, four HAVIS SHIELDS fixed scene lights on body, and two rear-mounted HAVIS SHIELDS tripod lights.

The City of Ellijay (GA) Fire Department uses its LUVERNE (now CRIMSON FIRE APPARATUS) pumper as a first-out unit responding to all fires and motor vehicle accidents, according to Chief Shawn H. Hefner.

  • CUMMINS ISC 330-hp diesel engine with ALLISON MD 3060P automatic transmission;
  • WATEROUS CS single-stage, 1,250-gpm pump with 13/4-inch front bumper line, two 13/4-inch crosslays, rear 21/2-inch discharge, and TFT Crossfire monitor;
  • UPF 1,000-gallon water tank;
  • ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors and four wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;
  • WARN front-mounted six-ton winch;
  • AMKUS rescue equipment; and
  • light and power with HONDA 5.5-kw gasoline generator and two GFE floodlights at rear.

Features/Equipment:

The Community Fire Co. No. 1 of Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, combines two trucks in one with this SWAB pumper tanker. Engineer Keith Fenstermacher says it responds to all structure fires with sufficient personnel and capability for fire attack, water supply, lighting, and a command post.
