IL Firefighter Dies After Being Struck by Apparatus at Fire Scene

A volunteer firefighter was killed when he was struck by a fire apparatus while battling a structure fire Sunday night in Bartleso, Illinois.

The Associated Press reports (http://trib.in/Xiis7u) that the victim, Timothy Jansen, 45, had been a volunteer firefighter for about 15 years. His survivors include a wife and two young daughters, according to the Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/SBxDVZ).

Santa Fe Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Adam Maue said Jansen was in the first truck that arrived at the fire scene.

“He slipped off and the truck struck him,” Maue said. The driver of the truck didn’t know Jansen had fallen, and thought it was all right to move the truck, Maue told reporters.

Jansen was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
