Illinois Firefighters Use Drone at House Fire

Firefighters used a drone to help them with operations during a house fire Wednesday in the Chicago suburb of Orland Park, Illinois.

The fire may have been caused by a lightning strike, according to WLS.

The fire chief said flames were seen on the roof of a two-story home, the report said, and when crews arrived on scene they found flames spreading across the roof and through the attic.

Firefighters used the drone to track the spread of flames in order to concentrate water where it was needed, according to the report. There was reportedly no one in the home at the time of the fire.

There is significant interest in the use of drones in the fire service for recon during firefighting operations and other functions. Several departments have already made headlines regarding their use of drones at fire scenes, although some civilian drone operators have caused disruptions during fires, especially during California wildland fire suppression activities.
