A veteran Kansas City (MO) firefighter was critically injured in an apparatus crash and could lose a leg after a driver Tuesday afternoon crossed the center line, causing a car accident. Police suspect the driver may have tried to go around traffic that had yielded to the apparatus.
Jeff Smith, was in serious but stable condition Tuesday night, according to a news report from The Kansas City Star. Smith, a fire apparatus operator, was behind the wheel when the crash occurred. The other driver, a young woman, suffered minor injuries; a toddler in the car was unhurt.
