LOGISTICS IN LOS ANGELES: A TWO-PRONGED APPROACH
Satisfying the logistical resources needed during the emergency response to the Northridge Earthquake required a coordinated effort between LAFD firefighters assigned to Logistics Command and personnel from the city’s Supply and Maintenance Division.
J.J. O’Neill, commander of the Supply and Maintenance Division, states, in his afteraction report to the LAFD:
“In the aftermath of the January 17, 1994, earthquake, the Supply and Maintenance Division coordinated, organized, procured, and supplied food, fuel, apparatus, mechanical assistance, and miscellaneous supplies to meet the needs of firefighting personnel.
“From January 17 through January 28, 1994, the [Division] procured 3,000 meals and other food items from contracted vendors; set up an emergency purchase order with [a grocery store] for other food and snack items; recalled mechanics to duty and set up 12-hour shifts to assure their availability on a 24-hour basis; supplied a fuel tanker to the command post; hired overtime mechanics at Supply and Maintenance and the Valley Shops to ensure maximum utilization of the emergency fleet; and supplied other miscellaneous supplies and equipment from warehouse stock and contracted vendors.”
