A Minnesota volunteer firefighter has been suspended for reportedly flying a Confederate flag from a fire apparatus during a holiday parade.
KARE reported that Brian Nielsen drove a Hartland Fire Department rig in the Third of July Parade in the city of Albert Lea, and that both an American and Confederate flag were flying from the vehicle.
Nielsen told KARE that he is not racist nor a Confederate sympathizer, but he’s fed up with politicians and businesses trying to remove the Confederate flag from history.
He apologized to the fire department for attaching them to his statement and to parade goers who may have been offended, the report said.
The flying of the Confederate Flag has come under intense debate in social media of late after a white man who was apparently a Confederate sympathizer brutally slaughtered nine black parishioners at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.
