Tukwila (WA) – A semi rig crash on the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 early Friday tied up traffic for miles and sparked a huge brush fire, triggering a massive emergency response.
The drama unfolded at about 2:15 a.m. when the semi veered off the freeway near the Southcenter Mall exit. The rig crashed through the guardrail, plowed through thick trees and brush, then plunged down a steep, 35-foot embankment into a narrow ravine.
The crash ignited a brush fire which quickly spread into the surrounding trees as the injured truck driver struggled to escape the cab and get to safety.
Meanwhile, motorists on the freeway spotted flames and smoke billowing from the ravine and called 911. As firefighters arrived to battle the blaze, they spotted the crashed semi trailer rig down the embankment and determined the driver was trapped below with no way out.
As crews worked out a rescue plan for the driver, firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and keep it from spreading.
