FAA Proposes Sweeping Revisions in Helicopter Rules

By Mike McEvoy

In response to continued outcry over perceived lack of oversight and rules that would improve safety of air medical operations in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a set of comprehensive new helicopter safety rules that include air ambulances. The changes, if adopted, would strengthen flight rules and procedures, improve training and communications, and add additional on-board safety equipment. The FAA is seeking commentary on the proposed rules, posted at http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/pdf/2010-24862.pdf. You can also download a copy of the proposed rules by CLICKING HERE. Comments can be mailed or filed electronically at http://www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#home and are due no later than January 10, 2011.
