New Jersey Paramedic Dies in the Line of Duty

James V. Maguire, a paramedic with the Hillsborough (NJ) Rescue Squad, reportedly died in the line of duty on Monday following a call.

NJ.com reported that Maguire, 57, had performed CPR for an extended period of time at an incident, and, less than 20 hours later, he apparently suffered a heart attack.

Squad Chief David Gwin noted that Maguire’s entire adult life was dedicated to public service, as a United States Marine, an EMT and paramedic, and as a police officer. Maguire joined the Hillsborough Rescue Squad in 1979 and was active with it ever since.

Last week, a firefighter in Illinois died suddenly while performing CPR on a cardiac arrest patient.
