NY Firefighers Hampered by Hoarding in Apartment Rescue

Fire Department of New York (FDNY) firefighters raced to pull an elderly man from clutter-filled apartment during a fire this morning in the Bronx.

Firefighters rescued Theodore Washington, 86, from his third-floor apartment, and he was hospitalized in critical condition, according to a report from the New York Daily News (http://nydn.us/16tAb1F).

A neighbor said the victim had been living alone since his wife was moved to an assisted living facility six months ago. The neighbor said firefighters had to contend with multiple locks on the apartment, and also tried to access the victim via a window.

Fire officials said there were Collyer’s Mansion conditions in the burning apartment, referring to extreme hoarding.
