CPSC warns of scarves

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a warning concerning 375,000 sheer rayon scarves that failed to pass its flammability tests and which it describes as “dangerously flammable.” The scarves violate the Flammable Fabrics Act and are being recalled. They were made in India and were sold nationwide at nearly 2,000 large chain stores and small boutiques. A majority of the scarves bear the “Fashonique II” label and may be made of 100 percent rayon or 65 percent rayon/35 percent metallic. The scarves should be returned to the retailers from whom they were purchased.

Among other brand names that may appear on these scarves are ATG, All that Glitters, Hasting & Smith, April Cornell for Cornell Trading, Casual Corner, Berkshire, Peppermint Bay, Sterling Styles, Putumayo, and Willis Hill for Accessories Int`l. Scarves without brand names may be identified by labels with the following numbers: RN 13962, RN 52466, RN 63408, RN 79756, RN 36791, RN 62500, and RN 71290.

The majority of the scarves were sold by Bon-Worth, Burlington Coat Factory, Caldor, Cato, Hit or Miss, Mervyn`s, Ross, T.J. Maxx, Simply 6/Simply Fashions, and Venture Stores. Numerous other retailers also are participating in the recall.
