Factory Mutual moves to ensure proper sprinkler installation

Procedures for ESFR sprinkler designers and installers introduced by Factory Mutual (FM) are aimed at disseminating “widespread understanding of installation requirements.” Joseph Hankins, of the Standards Division of Factory Mutual, explains: “Factory Mutual`s studies have shown unequivocally the value of ESFR sprinklers in protecting facilities from fire. However, their value disappears if they are not properly installed.”

Sprinkler designers and installers will be required to submit with their plans a completed questionnaire for review. The document will provide information that will help FM ensure that new installations comply with the standards as outlined in its Data Sheet 2-2. Additionally, FM is suggesting to insurance clients language outlining expectations to general and sprinkler contractors that is to be included in contracts.

Details on these initiatives may be obtained from local FM offices or on FM`s web site, http://www.factorymutual.com. n
