Responding Fair Lawn (NJ) firefighters made a gruesome discovery while responding to a recent house fire.
Shortly before midnight on June 1, 2016, a caller alerted Fair Lawn Police that their neighbor’s home was on fire. Additional calls indicated that the residents may be trapped inside. Upon arrival, the fire chief reported a heavy smoke condition from the two-story home and confirmed entrapment on the second floor.
As firefighters stretched lines into the home and initiated searches, a deceased male subject was located on the first floor with a gunshot wound. During the primary search, two additional victims were located on the second floor, also deceased with gunshot wounds. Companies also encountered a heavy fire condition on the second floor which extended into the attic and through the roof.
The roof was quickly opened up and with three handlines in operation. The main body of fire was knocked down in less than 20 minutes. The fire was declared under control in an hour.
According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the elderly couple in their 70s who owned the home were killed by their son in his 50s, who then killed himself. The actual cause of the fire is still under investigation and one firefighter was transported to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries.
