Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act reauthorized

The Science Subcommittee of the House Science, Space and Technology panel on September 20 approved by voice vote a draft bill that would authorize $31.5 million each year for the U.S. Fire Administration for fiscal years 1995 through 1997.

The bill also would establish a 12-member U.S. Fire Advisory Council to determine whether the goals set by the National Commission on Fire Prevention and Control more than 20 years ago have been achieved.

At a hearing before the markup, U.S.Fire Administrator Carrye B. Brown told the panel that the fire agency opposed establishing such a council because it would duplicate the agency`s efforts. Panel Chairman Rich Boucher (D-VA), however, defended the creation of the council, which, he says, has the unanimous support of fire prevention and management groups.
