Fire Department, Sprinkler Organization Help Fire Science Club with ‘Burn Box’

By Dale Eriksen

Every year, the University of New Haven Fire Science Club in West Haven, Connecticut, holds what is called the “Burn Box,” in which we build a mock room to light on fire to show students the effects of a fire.

This year, with partnership with the Connecticut Fire Sprinkler Coalition and West Haven Fire Department, we were able to go bigger and better than past years.  We were able to build two 8×8 rooms that were up to code, one being sprinklered and one non-sprinklered. This year’s focus was to be able to show the positive effects a sprinkler system would have in a residential application.

Check out a video of the thermal and regular views while this exercise was transpiring.
