Fire safety instructional materials for special education

Robert B. Ryan

Fire Prevention Bureau

Waldwick (NJ) Fire Department

As a member of the Fire Prevention Bureau, I am involved in a fire safety program that involves all age groups from preschool to senior citizens. But the group that has me concerned is children in special education schools and facilities.

During the year, I visit two such schools in our area–one is for learning disabled children ages 7 to 15, who have a variety of learning and social difficulties, and the other is for children with neurological and behavioral difficulties. In all the time I have been instructing these children, I have not found any resources that would give me direction in how to present fire safety to these populations. Teachers and administrators have attended all my presentations in these schools, and the feedback has been favorable. Yet, I still wonder about the efficacy of the material presented. I would appreciate receiving information on how I can obtain appropriate instructional materials for these students. Please contact me: Waldwick Fire Prevention Bureau, P.O.
