Fire safety taught to preschoolers by video

The two-and-a-half hour interactive video program Play safe! Be safe!(TM), broadcast via satellite, teaches New York State preschoolers lifesaving fire safety skills. The program is conducted by Dr. Robert Cole, a national authority on fire safety education and an associate professor at the University of Rochester, New York. The program was broadcast from WCNY-TV studios in Syracuse, New York, to 70 sites throughout the state.

Hundreds of licensed daycare providers and fire service educators viewed the program. Daycare providers received in-service credits needed to maintain their licensing.

The program, developed by educators with a grant from BIC Corporation, was launched in 1994. The lesson package includes a 20-minute video, a teacher`s manual, and a variety of supporting activities including a card game, vinyl activity boards, and illustrated story cards.

Participants at all sites were able to call in or fax questions to the studio; Dr. Cole answered them on the air. Early childhood development experts were at each of the 70 sites to provide additional information.
