Denise Baclawski, executive director of the University of Nevada, Reno Fire Science Academy (FSA), announced today the appointment of Wayne Eder as the new director of the FSA. Eder will replace Gary Zunino, who recently announced his retirement from state service as of July 26.
Baclawski commented, “Wayne is an exceptional leader who is highly respected in the fire service. Wayne brings a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and experience to the Fire Science Academy and is a great addition to the FSA management team. He will succeed Gary Zunino, who has done so much to make the FSA the success it is today.”
Eder brings 28 years of increasingly responsible fire service experience with federal, state, county, fire district, tribal, and private fire agencies to the FSA. A graduate of the National Fire Academy’s four-year Executive Fire Officer Program, Eder has a master’s degree in business administration, a bachelor’s degree in fire protection administration, an associate’s degree in fire science, and upper division college certifications in fire protection and hazardous waste. He has an extensive background in structural, wildland fire/emergency management and command, industrial/refinery, aircraft rescue and firefighting, fire training, prevention, public education, and investigation. Eder has experience and certification as a community college fire-science adjunct professor throughout California. He has published articles in national fire journals and through industry-specific Web sites. Eder is a certified National Fire Protection Association fire officer I and II; fire instructor I, II, and III; fire prevention officer I; fire investigator I; hazardous materials incident commander; specialist; instructor; and technician in California and Oregon.
“As a graduate of the FSA, I have always respected the staff and the mission of the academy. It is an honor to have been appointed as Director, and I believe that our team will be able to take the academy to a new level of excellence,” said Eder. “My family and I look forward to relocating to the Elko area, and I look forward to serving the residents and visitors of the State of Nevada.”
