Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition expands information campaign

The Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) plans to expand its educational awareness campaign. Ron Hazelton, Good Morning America`s home improvement editor, will continue as national spokesperson.

The campaign is designed to educate consumers about the life-saving value of automatic home fire sprinklers, particularly in newly constructed one- and two-family dwellings. A pilot program was conducted in Connecticut in 1997. This year, campaigns will be in Illinois and Oregon, and efforts in Connecticut will continue. The focus will be on improving the public`s understanding of the life-saving value of sprinklers in homes.

Up to now, the annual campaign funding has come exclusively from the founders of the HFSC: the American Fire Sprinkler Association, the National Fire Protection Association, and the National Fire Sprinkler Association. Each contributed $50,000 in 1997 and has pledged the same amount for 1998. So that the campaign may be extended to other areas of the country, the Coalition is looking for other organizations and individuals to become partners in the education program and has established a two-tier fee structure for new members: Steering Committee membership, $25,000 a year–members may vote on future operational decisions–and Affiliate membership, $1,500 a year.
