Hotel/Motel Safety Act on the move
The Hotel and Motel Safety Act of 1989, which would deny reimbursement to those federal employees that, when traveling, stay in hotels without sprinklers, is making its way through the legislative process.
H. R. 94 was passed by the House Subcommittee on Science, Research, and Technology in mid-April, and in early May was waiting to be scheduled for a full markup by the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. If released by the committee, the bill would next go to the House floor for possibly more revisions and a vote.
The bill, sponsored by Congressman Sherwood L. Boehlert (R-N.Y.), Congressman Doug Walgren (D-Pa.), and Robert Walker (R-Pa.), is essentially the same as last year’s version, except that it references NFPA 13 and 13R, standards that deal with where sprinklers are placed within a building.
