Story and photo by Dennis Walus
On Tuesday May 27, 2014, at approximately 1245 hours, the Southfield (MI) Fire Department was dispatched to a reported building fire.
The first-arriving engine reported smoke showing from a large recycling plant. All five Southfield stations were then requested.
Firefighters stretched lines and preformed an interior attack on the building. Command then requested a second alarm to the scene for manpower. With companies operating inside the building and conditions not improving, command pulled all crews out of the building and set up defensive operations.
Southfield and Royal Oak aerials were set up on the A side of the building while other crews operated master streams on the D side of the building with heavy smoke conditions in the rear. Companies operated in defensive mode for about five hours to bring this fire under control.
Southfield, Royal Oak, Ferndale, Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, West Bloomfield, and Farmington Hills Fire Departments responded to this incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
