More fire-resistant plastic urged for electrical appliances
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has proposed strengthening UL 746C, the standard that governs the flammability of plastics used in electrical appliances. The action was taken after a series of meetings of the Industry Advisory Group of UL Plastic Materials. At the request of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) participated in the Group. The CPSC has been proposing that more fire-resistant plastic be used in all electrical appliances.
Some 250 UL standards contain direct references to the UL 746C requirement. In its written comments to the UL, the NASFM argued for even stronger changes than what UL had proposed.
