N.Y. Names Safety Chief

The safety division of the New York City Fire Department has been expanded by Commisioner Charles J. Hynes.

Acting Deputy Chief William T. Jones was appointed to head the division. Commissioner Hynes has named nine members in the safety committee “to minimize, to the greatest degree possible, the risks in this most dangerous of all professions.”

Jones’ specific task will be to reorganize and lead the Safety Division including the supervision of an approximately 45-member unit of five battalion chief and aides, the Research and Development Unit, the Mask Service Unit, the Safety Statistics and Publication Unit and the OSHA (Occupational Safety Hazards Act) Unit.

Hynes said, “Chief Jones or his representative will respond to all second and greater alarms and major emergencies of any kind to examine the area for hazardous conditions and materials and to act as advisor on fire fighter safety to the chief in command at the scene.”
