STEVEN T. EDWARDS, acting fire chief of Prince George’s County (MD) Fire Department, has been named fire chief. A 21-year veteran, he has held every department position from high school cadet on. Edwards has received numerous honors and awards, including the Gold Star of Valor in 1979 for rescuing two firefighters during a building fire and explosion.

Edwards has an associate’s degree in fire science and a bachelor of science degree in fire service management from the University of Maryland and is currently enrolled in a graduate program. He also has completed executive-level courses at the National Fire Academy and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Edwards serves on the Maryland Fire/Rescue Education and Training Commission.

DANIEL JONES has been appointed fire chief of the Chapel Hill. North Carolina Fire Department. A 15-year veteran of the fire service, Jones was deputy fire chief of operations for the Pinellas Park (FL) Fire Department. He replaces Chief Everette Lloyd in Chapel Hill, who recently retired.

Jones is an active member of many fire service organizations, serving on the executive board of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. In 1982 he was named Florida Fire Instructor of the Year. He attended St. Petersburg Junior College and is a graduate of the Executive Development Program of the National Fire Academy. Jones is a certified emergency medical technician and certified firefighter and fire instructor.
