NFPA issues call for NFPA 1 proposals and meeting papers

July 3, 1998, is the closing date for proposals for changes to NFPA 1, Fire Prevention Code, for the Year 2000 edition. NFPA 1 provides minimum requirements needed to establish a reasonable level of fire safety and property protection from hazards created by fire and explosion.

Proposal forms may be found in the back of any NFPA code or standard or can be obtained from the NFPA by calling (617) 984-7249. Submit them to Secretary, Standards Council, NFPA, 1 Batterymarch Park, Quincy, MA 02269-9101; by fax (617) 770-3500; or through NFPA`s Home Page http://www. nfpa.org.

Abstracts of papers to be considered for presentation at the NFPA 1999 Annual Meeting to be held May 17-20 in Baltimore, Maryland, must be submitted by September 1, 1998.

To be considered, papers must be noncommercial and of technical and professional merit aimed at advancing fire safety. Technological breakthroughs, code administration and enforcement, cost-benefit analysis of code enforcement, fire suppression policies, public education, and other areas of urgent concern are of particular interest. Presentations should not exceed 30 minutes in length.

Submit an abstract with a brief biographical sketch to Casey C. Grant, assistant vice president, codes and standards administration, NFPA, P.O. Box 9101, Quincy, MA 02269-9101. Include organization or affiliation and mailing address, and indicate that the package is an application for the 1999 Annual Meeting.
