Owego (NY) Firefighters Threaten to Quit Over Safety Delays

Members of the Owego Village (NY) Fire Department have said they will resign if the village board does not approve its proposed new firefighting operations manual at a meeting this evening.

At least 21 firefighters are planning to walk away from the department if the Owego Village Board of Trustees does not approve the new 377-page operations manual, Assistant Fire Chief Mark Warfle told the Star-Gazette (http://stargaz.tt/POQXR7).

The changes stem from an effort to address safety issues that came to light following the January 2013 death of Captain Matthew Porcari, 34, who died while fighting a house fire. Village trustees have said they need more time to review the document.
