Every two weeks, retired Memphis (TN) firefighter George Thomas Edwards gets a check from the city for $7.58–not enough to buy a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a gallon of milk, according to a report on localmemphis.com.
Edwards joined the Memphis Fire Department in 1983 and ended up as a paramedic working isome of the city’s busiest areas.
Edwards has had heart troubles, asthma, high blood pressure, and two knee transplants, the report said. After paying for insurance, his mortgage, and other deductions, his take home check every week is less than eight dollars.
