Star fire sprinklers recalled

Star fire sprinklers recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Mealane Corp. (which was Star Sprinkler Co. until 1976) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is voluntarily recalling up to one million Star brand fire sprinklers manufactured from 1961 through 1976. They could fail in a fire. The sprinklers were installed nationwide, primarily in nursing homes, but may also be found in hospitals, in schools, at resorts, in stores, in office buildings, in warehouses, and in supermarkets.

The CPSC reports that 67 percent of the sprinklers removed from locations across the country and submitted for testing to independent testing laboratories such as Underwriters Laboratories and Factory Mutual Research Corp. failed to activate as they should.

The following Star sprinklers are being recalled: dry type models D-1, RD-1, RE-1, E-1, and ME-1.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, an independent, not-for-profit organization that evaluates and accredits hospitals and other long-term-care facilities, is supporting the recall. For additional information, contact Ken Giles, CPSC, at (301) 504-0580, ext. 1184.
