The CHIEF JOHN OBIER AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER LAB opened at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. The lab is named for John Obier, who served as the chief of the New Haven Fire Department in 1983. He began as a volunteer in 1954, became a paid firefighter in 1967, and finally became chief in 1983. He died in 1997. The lab will serve the 210-student fire science program at the university, allowing students to view the discharge patterns from various types of automatic sprinkler heads.
