Four new fire prevention programs are available from Syndistar, Inc. “Smoke Detectors—The Silent Guardians” explains the value of smoke detectors and demonstrates proper installation and maintenance; “Fire Safety for Senior Citizens” includes tips on cooking, heating, and electrical safety for the elderly; “Using Fire Extinguishers” educates the viewer on the different types of extinguishers and their selection and proper use; and “When in Doubt, Call a Firefighter” gives tips on how to safely extinguish small fires, but emphasizes the need to call the fire department when necessary. First Alert and the McDonald’s restaurant chain will offer customers “Plan to Get Out Alive,” a dramatic depiction of home fires and how to survive them. Availability begins this month with displays, in-store promotions, and a coupon offer for this fire safety video. The 45-minute video addresses several topics that are crucial to escaping a fire, and it’s hosted by Dr. Frank Field of WCBS-TV New York, an advocate of fire safety education. The video will be available for $4.95 (plus $1 postage and handling) with the purchase of any First Alert smoke detector, fire extinguisher, or rechargeable light, through jan. 31, 1989.

Fire Chief Ron Coleman is featured in a new video training course, “Making A Difference: The Fire Officer’s Role.” This integrated program features nine 50-minute video modules and an instructor’s guide. A student workbook encourages group discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and personal assessment exercises. The Continental Corporation and the NFPA announce the national distribution of “Using the Learn Not to Burn Curriculum,” an instructional videotape for school systems that don’t have live instruction by fire protection officials. The tape was made using teachers and volunteer firefighters from Cranburv, N.J.; it provides teachers with formal fire safety training to help children learn to protect themselves and others during a fire.
