University of Maryland offers scholarship for female fire protection student
The first Sarah B. Bryan Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a junior, senior, or graduate student in the University of Maryland`s Department of Fire Protection Engineering this fall. It will be presented on the basis of academic standing and the recommendation of a departmental faculty member.
The award was established by John L. Bryan, professor emeritus in the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University`s College Park campus, in memory of his wife, who served the university in several capacities for 15 years. “Sarah Bryan thought that the University of Maryland, College Park, was `the place` for women to pursue an outstanding career like fire protection engineering,” notes Steven M. Spivak, chair of Fire Protection Engineering. The fund is already sufficient to endow the scholarship at least $3,000 a year, according to Spivak.
