Bill Would Establish Grants for Thermal Imaging Cameras

WASHINGTON, D.C.–Twenty-two Congressmen have added their support to the Access to Thermal Imaging Cameras Act (H.R. 827), which would establish a federal grant program to help career and volunteer fire departments buy thermal imaging cameras. Fire departments would have to match one-third the cost of the camera.

The bill was introduced by Representatives Felix Grucci (R-NY) and Curt Weldon (R-PA) and has been referred to the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

If approved as proposed, the program would start with $100 million in 2002 with a $100 million appropriation. The bill stipulates that fund reductions in other federal programs would offset this expenditure. The Federal Emergency Management Agency would administer the program.
