Firefighter Training Drill: Troubleshooting Hoselines

By Forest Reeder

The art and science of advancing hoselines is truly a career-long objective. Personnel, interior/exterior arrangements of furniture, debris, and construction features routinely cause the engine company difficulty in smooth and effective lead-outs. Several problems require the quick thinking engine crew to troubleshoot what the issue is and to provide an effective solution without endangering themselves or stalling the attack.

Picture yourself as a member of a fire attack crew advancing a line when the potential problems described below occur. List as many possible reasons for the problem and the correct remedy for each one as your drill. Complete a simulated practical skill drill using locally applied procedures or other reference materials for the hands-on portion of this training session. Andy Fredericks (FDNY, RIP 9/11) taught us: The Fire Goes as the First Line Goes!
