As in any occupation, there is a potential for accidents every day. When done properly, the role of accident investigation is an important part of prevention. Documentation, witness interviews and fact-finding are some of the tasks required to do a thorough investigation. Accident investigations should be done anytime there is a loss (property damage, injury, or near-miss) and follow a systematic process using department policy and procedure.
Many organizations have a template for investigation or investigation form that is used to track information needed. Local assistance from law enforcement or other more experienced agencies may be beneficial during difficult or complex investigations. Review your local procedure for conducting investigations using this week’s drill as a discussion point guide to help you understand your procedure.
