Drill of the Week: Basics of Department Discipline

A basic management function for officers may include the discipline of members who fail to meet department expectations or standards. Most organizations will define the limits of discipline and punishment that a officer can issue, but the ability to avoid the use of formal discipline of a member is even more important.

Discipline should be used after other coaching/counseling is used without success. Some infractions require immediate formal discipline, and that must be imposed according to department standards.

In this drill, review SOG, labor contract rules and regulations and any other form of policy that describe an officer’s responsibility and disciplinary procedures.
