Drill of the Week: Lockout/Tagout Procedures

By Forest Reeder

Many rescue and service-related operations require a basic knowledge of lock-out/tag-out procedures. Industrial, commercial, machinery, and even residential occupancies can have equipment that may need to be secured before operations can begin.

Lockout means you are preventing the sudden and uncontrolled release of energy from a machine or piece of equipment. These systems must be identified and controlled by trained rescuers during operations. Department procedures should cover these operations and should be reviewed along with this training session.
