Drill of the Week: Radio Communications

By Forest Reeder

Communications on the fireground are often cited as contributing factors in poor operations and even in firefighter injury and death. Understanding the communications procedures used by your department are essential to safety and survival as well as making the operation run smoother. The entire process of an emergency operation response requires complete in-tegration of the various communications components.

The initial report of an emergency all the way through the apparatus in quarters message are components of this process. Using department operations procedures and MABAS level procedures, discuss the communication factors in this drill. Practical exercises are included to allow practical experience in providing clear and concise communications.
