Albuquerque (NM) Fire Academy Names Auditorium After Retired Assistant Chief

Gregory Hasman – Albuquerque Journal, N.M.

Jan. 6—The Albuquerque Fire Academy renamed its training auditorium after Sam Trujillo, a former assistant chief who served with the city for years.

The renaming was courtesy of the city’s Stories of Us program, which honors community members past and present who dedicated their lives and work to improving the city.

“Sam Trujillo has truly left his mark through an irrepressible spirit of service and innovation that continues to influence our fire department,” Mayor Tim Keller said in a statement. “Having Sam’s name on this training auditorium is a fitting and well-deserved tribute, honoring a lifetime of public service that continues to this day.”

Trujillo joined the city’s fire department in September 1968 as a member of the 18th Cadet Class. During his career, he worked in fire suppression, emergency medical services, HAZMAT and administration. Trujillo was also instrumental in setting up the flood channel rescue program, Albuquerque Fire Rescue spokesperson Jason Fejer said.

“His leadership and vision left an indelible mark on Albuquerque and AFR and his name will now be a part of every training session and ceremony held in this auditorium,” Fejer said.

Trujillo retired in 1985 as the assistance chief in charge of the paramedic program. After his retirement, he became one of the founding members of the Albuquerque Fire Department Retirees Association.

“One of the most important aspects of the fire service is honoring our traditions and the foundation laid by our predecessors,” Albuquerque Fire Chief Emily Jaramillo said. “Sam Trujillo has always demonstrated his forward thinking and has been vital in implementing progressive programs, but it is his dedication to honoring the past that defines his legacy.”
