Firefighter Training Drill: Portable Ladder Tips

Douglas Mitchell, Jr.
Lieutenant, Fire Department of New York
Instructor, Traditions Training LLC.

On nearly every piece of fire apparatus in this country can be found a complement of portable ladders. Engine, Rescue, Squad or Truck, the portable ladder is certainly one of the many mainstays in our equipment cache.

In our quest to reduce set up time and maintain maximum tactically proficiency in the deployment of such equipment, when on the fireground, we must take time to make time. How can we do that you ask? Take a good look at the set of portable ladders on your rigs. Some of the ‘set up time,’ precious seconds, can be saved with a few, small, seemingly minute details. Are your ladders ready to go to work?

Pull your ladders down or slide them out today! Are they set up for maximum efficiency and operational success?  Don’t think so, know so…
