Greensboro (NC) Firefighter Recruit Dies in Training

Andrew Vaughn, 36, a Greensboro Fire Department firefighter recruit, died Wednesday morning during a training run, according to reports.

Vaughn, of McLeansville, was one of 32 people slated to officially join the department on September 1.

He and other recruits went on a mile-and-a-half training run at 8 a.m. that was designed to help assess their physical fitness when he collapsed. The training session, which included sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups and the run and was part of a program designed to get recruits physically fit.

It’s not clear if high temperatures at the time of the incident contributed to the death, WFMY reports. Though the region has been experiencing hot weather, it was 76 degrees at the time of the morning run.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Vaughn family,” the City of Greensboro Fire Department posted on social media. “As we experience a loss unlike anything we have in the past, we appreciate the support from our community.”

The cause of death is under investigation.
