IAFF Learning Program

Through the IAFF open learning fire service program, Memphis State University has granted the first bachelor’s degree to Roy Pritchard, a 19-year veteran of the Memphis Fire Department and a member of IAFF Local 1784. His degree was in professional studies.

With the help of federal funding, the IAFF developed this program under a grant from the United States Fire Administration to enable fire fighters to receive college credits without leaving home.

The curriculum, used in nine universities and colleges in the United States, is taught on an independent study basis by mail, and includes six courses.
