Drill: Inexpensive VES Prop

By C. “Mike” Elston

An acquired structure is a valuable training tool for a fire department. For some departments, acquired structures are few and far between. If we have the ability to use an acquired structure, being able to repeatedly use portions for drills is very important. This training drill will focus on a way to use and inexpensive training prop to create vent-enter-search (VES).

A simple window prop for VES can be created by using a 36-inch wide roll of drop cloth/hall runner paper that can be purchased at most hardware stores. The paper can be stapled or nailed over a window so the firefighter can simulate clearing out window prior to performing VES on a room, and can be used in conjunction with a smoke macine.
