ISFSI Sessions to Feature Training Company Officers

The development of company officers will be the theme of the fall conference of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors at Denver November 1-4. The Thursday through Sunday sessions at Stouffer’s Denver Inn will cover both the training of company officers and definitions of their responsibilities.
In one of the few breaks from the theme, Administrator Gordon Vickery of the United States Fire Administration will discuss the new directions of his administration’s program to meet the requirements of the nation’s fire service. Robert Peterson, coordinator of the Cumberland County, Pa., Fire Training Program, will talk about fire concerns with nuclear installations in relation to the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant incident.
In a keynote address, Chief Alan Brunacini of Phoenix will define the company officer, and later Assistant Chief Carl Holmes of Oklahoma City will tell how to motivate the company officer.
Role of company officer
Chief Gary Beason of Englewood, Calif., will describe the company officer’s role as a member of the administrative team, and Bruce Piringer, supervisor of the Kentucky fire training program, will outline state responsibilities in company officer training.
The rural fire officer and his needs will be depicted by Lawrence Davis, chairman of the Washington County, Pa., Fire School, and Assistant Chief Dale Osbaugh of Stapleton International Airport, Denver Fire Department, will review the training of company officers for crash fire and rescue work. Fire officers’ responsibilites in the area of emergency medical services will be described by James Page, executive director of the Advanced Coronary Treatment Foundation, Basking Ridge, N. J. A view of the company officer of yesterday, today and tomorrow will be presented by Lieutenant George Malik of Chicago.
Chief Warren Isman of the Montgomery County, Md., Fire and Rescue Services will offer a simplified approach to hydraulics for fire officers, and Lieutenant Daniel B. C. Gardiner of Fairfield, Conn., will outline ways of implementing an in-service training program. The training function of the company officer will be viewed by Joseph Lewand, manager of the Fire Service Training Program, Golden, Colo.
Problems of shopping malls
The fire problems of shopping malls will be discussed by Chief Roger McGary, fire protection engineer, Merck and Company, Rahway, N.J., and the officer’s responsibility for fire scene analysis will be defined by Robert Carter, principal arson specialist, National Fire Protection Association.
Instructor Bob Patterson, Fire Service Extension, Iowa State University, will explain driver training at the company level. Captain Marion Davie of Denver and Lieutenant Carl Smith of Aurora, Colo., will jointly present their views on comunications in the fire company. Fire officer liability will be explained by Chief Robert Little of the Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Service, York, Pa., and Anthony Semenza, fire director, Chevron USA, Carteret, N.J., will tell what industry expects of a company officer.
In addition to these speakers at general sessions, there will be a m multitude of speakers covering as many subjects at workshops of the municipal instructors, state instructors, state directors, volunteer instructors, college instructors, industrial instructors, federal instructors and public educators sections of the ISFSI on Thursday and Saturday afternoons. The subject matter at these workshops will be keyed specifically to the special interests of the various sections.
