Mechanics certification program a first

A fire apparatus mechanics examination will be conducted on August 27 during the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ conference in Indianapolis, Indiana as part of a national certification program.

This program expands upon a system developed by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence by testing repair knowledge, skills, and abilities as applied to fire apparatus. Subjects include fire pumps and accessories and fire apparatus preventative maintenance procedures.

Certification will be awarded to those who: have two years of experience as a mechanic with automobiles and/or trucks, with one year of work on fire department vehicles, or three years of experience as a mechanic with automobiles and/or trucks other than fire department vehicles; successfully completed the appropriate ASE tests and have current ASE certification; successfully completed the IAFC-sponsored exam; and properly registered for the exam.
